Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is short-term health insurance?
Short-term health insurance (also called short-term limited-duration insurance) is temporary medical coverage meant to bridge a gap between other health plans — for example between jobs, before a new employer's plan starts, or while waiting to join a spouse's or family plan. It is not a long-term substitute for major medical coverage.
Is short-term health insurance the same as ACA Marketplace insurance?
No. Short-term plans are generally not ACA-compliant, which usually means they can medically underwrite applicants, exclude pre-existing conditions, and skip ACA-required benefits — while Marketplace plans must cover pre-existing conditions and essential health benefits. A licensed agent can explain which applies to your situation.
How long can I keep a short-term health insurance plan?
How long a short-term plan can run, and whether it can be renewed, is set by federal rule and by your state, and both have changed in recent years and vary by state — ask a licensed agent what's currently available where you live.
What's the difference between COBRA and short-term health insurance?
COBRA lets you continue your exact former employer plan, usually at the full group-plan cost, while short-term insurance is a separate, generally lower-cost temporary plan that doesn't have to match your old coverage. Which makes sense depends on your health needs and budget — a licensed agent can walk you through both.
Can I buy short-term health insurance if I have a pre-existing condition?
Often only partially, or not for that condition. Many short-term plans medically underwrite applicants and exclude pre-existing conditions; ACA Marketplace coverage through a special enrollment period generally cannot. A licensed agent can explain which options fit your situation.
What is fixed indemnity insurance and how is it different from major medical coverage?
Fixed indemnity insurance pays a set cash amount for a covered event, like a doctor visit or hospital stay, rather than covering a percentage of costs the way major medical insurance does. It's sometimes used alongside, or in place of, other temporary coverage, but it isn't a substitute for comprehensive major medical insurance.
Do I qualify for a special enrollment period if I lose my job?
Usually yes — losing job-based health coverage is typically a qualifying life event that opens a special enrollment period for ACA Marketplace coverage, separate from the annual open enrollment window. A licensed agent or the Marketplace can confirm your specific deadline and options.
